This unit went over basic classroom management principles. First, it is important to pay attention to things such as gesture and voice. Good classroom management starts with a teacher who can engage the class and adjust their manner of speaking according to the activity. Second, it is important to consider how the students are grouped. Depending on the activity, group or individual work may be best. Each grouping has pros and cons, such as how much the students are able to talk vs. the teacher talk time. Third, the teacher should consider the classroom arrangement. A classic arrangement is rows of desks facing the front. This can maximize the teacher talk time and focus on the teacher. Depending on factors such as class-size and student personality, other set-ups such as a horse-shoe shape could be appropriate. On pro of this shape is it allows the teacher to be part of the group therefore encouraging more student talk time. Other important things to keep in mind for classroom management are to keep writing on the board as minimally disruptive as possible, as well as to keep instructions short and in simple language. Behavioral problems can be prevented if a teacher engages students and builds a good class rapport. Preventing boredom and encouraging and motivating students can help prevent behavioral problems as well. However, if a teacher does need to intervene, it is important not to make threats that cannot be carried out or to focus on the student rather than the behavior. Overall, I learned that good classroom management is important from the beginning, and that the teacher does have a lot of control over the classroom dynamics.
