Unit 20 provided troubleshooting for some common problems in the EFL classroom. First, it is important to start off on the right foot. The first lesson is essential for building a rapport with the class and learning what they hope to gain from learning English. The course book shouldn't be used nor should there be a formal grammar lesson. Warm-up activities are essential to every class because they get students in the mood to speak English and help lower their affective barriers. When faced with a mixed-level class, the teacher should never focus on only the higher or only the lower level students. Mixed-groups can help promote learning for both groups, but it should be varied to prevent higher level students from dominating the class. Large class sizes can be difficult to handle, so a teacher should be prepared to do activities designed for large groups like choral work, worksheets, and assigning group leaders. In order to prevent use of the native language in class, teachers should make sure they explain all activities in a way all students will understand and not to respond to use of the native language even if the teacher can understand. Finally, listening is a challenge for most students, and teachers should not shy away from listening activities due to this. Instead, teachers can pre-teach vocabulary and show students dialogue scripts after the second or third listen.
