Educators can asses a student's progress through homework, course unit test, half year exams, end of year exams and external tests. There are five different types of tests. Placement tests help form groups of students as the same level. A diagnostic test is designed to tell both the teacher and student what they do and don't know at the beginning of the test. Progress tests cover all 4 skills and indicates areas the students are having problems and suggests the skills that need to be revisited. Practice tests are used to prepare students for external exams.
External proficiency tests test general English, business and academic skills. Cambridge Assessments regulated by the non-teaching department of the University of Cambridge that offers a broad range of exams testing general, business and academic English. General English exams have five levels which includes the KET (Key English Test), PET (Preliminary English Test), FCE (First Certificate in English), CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) and CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English). CELS is an additional test for Certificate in English Language Skills.
Business Exams include the TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) which tests all four skills, is used by companies worldwide, and is accepted by some universities. In addition, there is the Cambridge BEC (Cambridge Business English Certificate) which has three levels: Preliminary, Vantage and Higher. The BULATS Exam is used with in companies.
Academic English tests includes the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and the IELTS (International English Language Testing System. The TOEFL is used by universities as an entry requirement and is recognized in over 90 countries. The IELTS covers all skills, is an entry-level exam for universities and is generally used to test reading and writing skills.
