Before this unit, I did not appreciate the complexity of conditional statements. Conditional statements contain two parts: the if… clause and the main, consequence clause. The complexity comes into play when considering the tenses of the two clauses. Based on the tenses, the conditionals are named: zero, first, second, third, and mixed. It is easy for students to get the usage of the conditionals confused. This unit provides some interesting teaching ideas based around causation and possible scenarios. The second covered topic in this unit is about switching from direct to reported speech. Teaching ideas include media news reporting role play, and emphasize the importance of going over this topic very slowly with students as there are many parts of speech that must change in the transition between direct and reported speech (i.e. pronouns, questions, time expressions, and verb tense).
