This final unit goes over some basic areas that may cause teachers trouble. The first topic is first lessons. It is important to get to know the students and establish rapport. Another area covered is on the necessity of warm up activities. It can feel like running in quicksand if a lesson begins right away. Warmers should encourage free use of language and review. Students in a class will invariably be at or stratify into different levels and speeds. Teachers can teach to the middle majority but use pair work or tailored work to help keep the lower level students motivated and the higher level students engaged. Teachers can get creative to maintain control over and enhance student talk time in large classes. If students using native language is a problem, the teacher can make sure the English instructions are presented clearly and at the appropriate level. Reluctant students can present a challenge but there are a number of ways to encourage them and make them feel comfortable and not-pressured. Some teachers can get discouraged with listening activities as students across the board can struggle with these. It is important to work through these difficulties as listening is one of the four key parts of learning a language. Overall I have really enjoyed this course. Some of the material I was familiar with, but other areas were new for me. I feel much more confident now, and I am so excited to have this material moving forward to refer to as a resource. I truly thank the whole ITTT team very much for the invaluable, thoughtful content and design.
