A good teacher must be enthusiastic, sensitive, caring and inclusive. It is important that a teacher cares more about student learning as there is a movement to student-centered lessons as opposed to teacher-centered lessons. This ideology is reflected in the roles of a teacher between which a good teacher can interchange. One of the most important roles is being an organizer in which activities and the function of groups are clearly laid out pre-task, and post-task the teacher brings the class back together for reflection. Other roles include assessor, prompter, model and observer. Good learners must have the desire to learn and are not afraid to take risks with the language, ask questions, evaluate self, and accept correction. It is important for a teacher to consider the culture, age group, language level, and the motivation of the learners when contemplating approaches and designing activities. Adults will have a more fixed learning style, may be focused on translation over immersive learning environment, could have some reservations about looking silly or unintelligent, may be more motivated as it comes from self vs stemming entirely or partly from parents. Younger learners can be broken up into three sub groups each with unique characteristics and possible challenges. Language level of learners can be broken up into lower, middle, and upper with each of the three levels having two designations. Therefore six levels of language are used as classifications, each level distinct in the extent of fulfillment in three criteria: range of topics, fluency, and accuracy. Many things may motivate people to learn English including: career, travel, school requirements, studying/living abroad, communication with other English speakers, and for the love of language.
