There are different past tenses in the English language: Past simple, past continuous, past perfekt simple and past perfect continuious. These tenses and their respective aspects are used in different communicative situations. For example, if an action was completed in the past, the simple past is used. If an action was going on in the past, we use the past continuous. If an action happened before another action in the past (in the same sentence most of the time), past perfect simple is used. Past perfect continuous is used when an action started in the past and went on until another action in the past started.
