Unit six is about past tenses: past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. The past simple tense uses the same word for person subjects (I, you, he, they, etc.) and usually adds "ed" to the root verb. However, there are many irregular verbs (most we use commonly) that changes spelling in the past tense with no common rule. Students just have to memorize the past tense versions as well as the past participles to form the perfect tenses. Past continuous uses the past tense of the "to be" verb and adds "ing" to the root verb. This is used when a continuous action happened in the past. Past perfect tense uses the past tense of "have" which is "had" and the past particle. This is used when talking about the past in the past. And then there is the past perfect continuous tense that is not used as often as the other tenses. This tense uses "had been" and the past particle ending in "ing." This is used when talking about a continuous event that occurred up until a specified time not specifying if finished or not.
