This unit encompasses how teachers can manage classroom settings for a more effective and positive outcome. It focused primarily on how eye contact, gestures and vocals can be used in the classroom to engage and discipline students. I learnt that grouping students based on varying tasks can be most helpful depending on the outcome to be achieved and the level of learning involved - for while a student working individually makes him/her more self reliant in the language, working in pairs or groups can often help students talk out ideas and share perspectives. Understandably, all styles will have advantages and disadvantages.
I also learnt that in creating classroom seating arrangements, it is very important to know and understand the student dynamic and how it will ultimately affect the classroom’s atmosphere. Classroom size will also play a role in making this decision.
Having the back turned to the students cannot be avoided but can be reduced if the teacher writes while students are otherwise engaged or uses an overhead projector (just to name two). But there are workarounds to reduce this and be more engaging in the classroom.
Establishing rapport is imperative to making classes fun for everyone. It helps the students work together cohesively and creates a warm environment.
Finally, maintaining discipline can be a delicate balance to attain in the classroom, but is not impossible. It is, therefore, very important to be firm but polite and adhere to the disciplinary standards of the school’s code of conduct. Teachers should also be mindful that students may misbehave for varying reasons including familial problems, low self esteem and boredom.
