There are five kinds of conditional sentences. There is the zero conditional statement, which is essentially an if/then statement. The first conditional is a little bit more abstract. It represents something that will happen in the even that something else takes place. The second conditional communicates something that would happen in the present if something in the past happened. The third conditional suggests that an event in the past would have taken place if something else has happened first. When one is referring to a statement made in the past, the tense changes to its past equivalent. For example, the present perfect changes to the past perfect.
