This unit gave video examples of a good lesson and a poorly done lesson. The first lesson was poorly done by the teacher. He came in late and did not engage the students. He announced what the lesson was about using long and difficult words, so the students did not understand what he was asking. He spoke quickly and not clearly. Students looked confused. He kept wiping his nose with his hand, which could be a cultural faux pas. He rushed through the study worksheet phase in which the students clearly did not understand what he wanted. When checking the worksheet, it was not clear what the correct answers were. The activity in the Activate phase was confusing and a bit demeaning. The second lesson went much better as evident by the students' smiles and participation. This time the teacher introduced himself and made an effort to know the students' names. He had written on the board the questions and answer forms of what he was asking during the Engage phase. He spoke slower and much more clearly. He corrected students appropriately. He wrote grammar rules on the board and compared "can" with "have/has." He monitored and checked for student understanding during study phase and was much more clear about the activity during the Activate phase. He ended the lesson with a proper goodbye unlike the first lesson.
