Language contains fours skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The first two skills are receptive skills and are the topic of this unit. The second two skills are productive skills and will be covered in a subsequent unit. We read and listen in order to obtain information or for entertainment. There are different depths of reading and listening depending on our goal. When it comes to planning a lesson around reading and/or listening, there are several things a teacher can do to assure the lesson goes as well as possible: select a topic that will interest students, get the students excited about the topic before the actual reading/listening, highlight any confusing vocabulary before the reading/listening (if it’s likely that not knowing the words will impair comprehension), carefully select a comprehension task, and plan activate activities that flow logically from the reading/listening.
