The last unit in this course offered suggestions for the first day of class. The first thing a teacher should do is establish rapport with the students and each other. It's important to get to know the students, their names, their interests and motivations, because the more comfortable they are, the better they will learn. With larger classes, it might be best to group students up along levels or interests, and with very large classes, it might be helpful to assign group leaders to assist with handing and materials and to keep their group focused. A good teacher balances the needs of the most advanced and the least advanced students, possibly juggling their time and attention, and possibly even giving different students different materials, or giving advanced students additional worksheets or games to challenge them and occupy their time.
From this course, I learned the importance of warming students up to the language before every lesson. I learned techniques for maximizing my time and effectiveness, such as mapping information out on a sheet of paper before writing on a whiteboard. And while I considered much of the advice and instructions of these units to be obvious and self-explanatory, these units enabled me to critically consider each action a teacher makes, and helped me reexamine my own language and grammar knowledge. I hope to use many of the games and resources provided in the course in my own teaching career.
