The productive skills in language are speaking and writing, and these are the focus of unit 12. Writing requires more accuracy and speaking more fluency. Accuracy and fluency are equally important in the learning of language. Different activities will focus more on accuracy or more on fluency. Examples of accuracy activities are: controlled usually, and in the Study phase of the lesson. One type of fluency activity is creative communication.
A challenge with speaking activities is that some students may be reluctant to speak. To encourage speaking, the teacher can make time for group and /or pair work, plan controlled and guided activities first so that students get comfortable with the accuracy of the new language before fluency-based speaking activities, allow students some planning time, and make the activities interesting and compelling.
Writing can be challenging for students whose native language uses a different alphabet. Beginning students my need guidance in how to form the letters. Spelling can be difficult as well because English is not a phonetic language. To improve spelling, reading English can help. Written assignments allow students to work on spelling, grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, layout, and style (casual, professional).
