Most sentences are in the active voice, but sometimes they are in the passive voice. If a sentence is in the passive voice, it means that it no longer has a subject. So, instead of saying, "I made mistakes," one could easily get out of trouble by using the passive voice and saying, "Mistakes were made". A proper sentence has an independent clause, which can stand alone. Dependent clauses, however, require an independent clause and are connected by a comma. Dependent clauses begin with conjunctions. Modal verbs, such as must, can, need to, and have to, are verbs that pair with other verbs to express obligation, ability, or a request. Also, phrasal verbs are verbs that are paired with a phrasal particle to give it a different meaning. For example, to show means something very different from to show up. Some phrasal verbs are regular, such as "up" meaning "for later use. Some examples are "fill up, "stock up", "drink up", and so on. "Up" can also mean "completely", such as "cut up", "tear up", or "eat up." However, there are also some irregulars, like "shut up" and "wolf down." Phrasal verbs come in different types. They can be transitive separable and intransitive. If a verb is transitive, that means that it must act upon an object, whereas an intransitive verb must not have an object with it in the predicate phrase.
