Writing a lesson plan is important because it helps teachers to organize their thoughts logically, can be used as a flexible reference, and is a record of what has been covered. A teacher can be organized to ensure a smoothly running lesson by having the lesson plan with them for quick reference, making sure all materials are there and that equipment is running smoothly, physically setting up, and chatting with students as they arrive. A lesson plan normally includes items such as: learner objective, personal aims, language point, teaching aids, anticipated problems, procedure, phase, timing, interaction, class level, number of students, date/time, teacher’s and observer’s names. The materials for unit 9 contain blank lesson plan documents that I may use in the future. Learner objectives are important because they state what students should be able to do by the end of the lesson. Reflecting on how the lesson went is an important part of teacher learning and self-improvement. It is also useful when planning a series of lessons. Working-in flexibility to plans is important, because how students are doing and needs that arise are variables for which all the planning in the world will not totally account.
