This chapter provided a helpful overview of discerning the types of verbs in the past tense. Simple past are verbs with an -ed ending or the word "did" before the verb, although there are many irregular simple past verbs that need to be memorized. Past continuous verbs have was/were before a verb with an -ing ending. Past perfect verbs have "had" before a verb that ends in -ed, and past perfect continuous verbs have the "had been" phrase before the -ing verb. Discerning each type of word helps me to quickly recognize the reasons for why each verb is use, allowing me to teach my students.
