Tutwiler, Mississippi TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This is the last unit on grammar in which modal auxiliaries, the passive voice, and, briefly, phrasal verbs and relative clauses are discussed. The grammar contained in this certification course is an overview and should provide a base for teaching English to non-native speakers. It will probably be necessary to continue learning grammar as a teacher and also it is a good idea to obtain reference books or online resources. An example list of modals are: may, must, have to, can, would, and be able to. Modals can be added to verbs to express ideas of ability, advice, possibility, more or less formality, and rules. To teach modal verbs, there are many role-play options. With passive voice it is important to note that the verb tense stays the same when switching between active and passive, and it is the form that changes. (The verb conjugation and tense in active voice transfers to the corresponding form of the auxiliary verb ‘be,’ and the original verb is switched to its past participle for the formation of passive voice.) Relative clauses are dependent clauses and modify a noun in a sentence and can be essential or non-essential, set off by commas, to the meaning of the sentence.
