Talking about past, present and future is the ground work of language, with the present being the cornerstone. It’s extremely important for students to have a strong grasp on the present tense, and to be able to grasp each different component. It’s even more important for teachers to be able to explain these components to their students.
It is common thought that there are three tenses in the English language. I learned in this unit that to be more accurate, it should be stated that there are twelve tenses in total. First, there are the major three that most people consider: past, present, future. Looking closer, each of these has four components: simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous. So expanding each into their four components gives us the overall twelve tenses.
It’s a teacher’s job to stress these four components of the major tenses, to help students understand the intricacies of English that often don’t exist in their own language. The present form is usually the first form students are using, so it is a vital opprotunity to understand these deeper areas of tense. If we help our students through these fundamentals, they will have a better groundwork when moving on to more complicated areas of English.
