In this unit we focused on the qualities of a good teacher, the different roles employed by teachers during lessons, the qualities of good learners and the differences between varying levels/ages of students.
A good teacher is knowledgeable, patient, motivating and engaging. Most importantly, a good teacher loves teaching, enjoys their interactions with students and gives appropriate levels of help and attention. The levels of involvement can be determined by the role the teacher has taken on for the lesson. Roles like Manager, Organizer and Model have the teacher acting as the center of attention so that the entire class is on the same page. Other roles like Participant, Prompter and Observer have the teacher taking a more distant position to allow the students to work on their own and to get special attention when needed.
Some people possess qualities that make them better learners than others, and compared to children adults are more motivated and focused in class. It is important that a student ask questions, have a desire to learn, and demonstrate some self-introspection so that they understand how they arrive at conclusions and make mistakes. Adults are more motivated and have more of a desire to learn because they typically enroll in classes themselves, whereas children are usually not in class on their volition.
