Three ways to assess a student`s language level are: tutorials, evaluation by students and tests. Tutorials are useful for groups or one on one to review the work done, to discuss the aims of the lesson as well as how well students` performance. Evaluation by students promotes genuine interaction and develops greater awareness among students. Different tests are done for different reasons. Placement tests are done at the initial stage to assist in the formation of groups of students at the same level. Diagnostic tests are designed to determine students knowledge as well as what they don't know. Progress tests test on work covered and is a formal written test or can also be an informal group activity. Practice test gives an idea of how ready students are to the required standard. Internal tests is given at the of a course or external examinations.
