Evaluation and testing are viewed as prominent components within the procedure of teaching a foreign language. Assessing students’ levels and outputs is of great importance. In this regard, students’ assessment consists of three main ways. These include tutorials, evaluation by students and tests. Initially, assessment through tutorials enables teachers to make a general review concerning the previously covered lessons. Tutorials also open the floor to questions and interaction between teachers and students among already held lessons or regarding any problems, let it be related to language points, vocabulary, comprehension and the like. Evaluation by students is students-centered evaluation wherein they evaluate the course output via a variety of means. Accordingly, students are asked to fill-in a questionnaire and/or survey to give feedback to the general activities being covered throughout the course. In this sense, teachers in their part, become acquainted with what students want to learn and, thus, avoid redundancy. As regarding tests, there are plenty of tests that vary depending on the provided function. Initially, placement test is implemented to gauge the accurate level of students. Generally speaking, placement test comprises of multiple choice question type and spoken interview to determine the fluency and currency of learners. It is critically used to classify students on their righteous level. Then, diagnostic test is a sort of test given to students at the commencement of a course. At this point, teachers evaluate students’ level with the aim of preparing suitable materials and activities related to students’ level. Additionally, periodic progress test is type of test often used to measure the process of students throughout the course. Periodic progress is inevitable for it provides teachers general knowledge regarding the progression of students on the language points covered. Furthermore, achievement test, as the title suggests, is used at the end of the course to assess what students have digested throughout the course. Lastly, practice test is referred to external examination exams for specific purposes. These include TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, and the like. In effect, evaluating and testing students is of paramount benefits to students’ improvement of any foreign language.
