Continuing from the introduction to present tenses in unit four, unit six goes into detail about past tenses. After students are introduced to present tenses, past tenses naturally follow. Once again, there are four different components with past tense, and it is important for students to be comfortable with each one. Also, students often become confused between the different components and tenses, so it’s important for teachers to be able to guide their students through these potential trouble areas. One of these problem areas unit six brings up is student confusion with past simple versus present perfect. This is because present perfect uses the past participle of the verb. Take this small dialog for example: A: “I went to Tokyo.” B: “Have you been to Tokyo many times?” A: “Yes, I have.” The first sentence is past simple, while the next two are present perfect. It’s very important to show students the difference between past simple forms of verbs versus past participle forms. That way, they can become more comfortable in their usage of different present and past tenses. As students go beyond the basic present tenses and move into the past tenses, it’s important to keep clear the groundwork and rules of each, in order to avoid any mix ups or confusion. If students go into learning future tenses with a strong ground work in past and present tenses, the new and last form will be that much more understandable for them.
