Clark, Missouri TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
The relationship between teacher and student are closely connected; one cannot exist without the other. In order to make this relationship thrive, one must ask what makes a good teacher, and a good learner.
At its core, beyond a solid grasp of the subject material, a teacher must care about the success or their students. Without this motivation, there is no base of reason to teach the students. A good teacher must also be flexible, and employ a wide variety of teaching styles, such as organizer, tutor, or observer. I have a learned in this unit that managing does have a place in the classroom as well, despite recent student-centered ideas on teaching. The balance, and when to apply each style, is what can allow a teacher’s students to succeed.
As for learners, they must be motivated to learn the subject material. Learners themselves can also be different ages, and different skill levels. I have learned in this unit that one age of learner isn’t necessarily “better” than the other, they simply come with their own advantages and disadvantages. For example, it may be easier to relate to adult learners, but they may feel more pressure to use the language correctly, or may have preconceived notions about language learning. Learners can be extremely varied, and it is the job of the teacher to take the age and level of each student into consideration.
While we may take for granted the ingrained nature of the teacher-learner relationship, I learned in this unit that it is important to break down each side into components. By doing this we can accurately reflect on what makes an effect teacher and a receptive learner.
