As an introduction to the course, this initial unit began with describing some of the key characteristics that make for a good teacher, and those that make a good learner. After that, it described the different general levels of learning a new language, different age groups of learners, and what can be generally expected of learners in these different age groups. Though basic and sometimes fairly "common sense", I believe these were important things to go over in order to set a baseline of understanding for how to begin approaching teaching English as a foreign language. I think it was particularly interesting to think about what the motivations for learning each age group is likely to have, so that a teacher can set their expectations and better know where to start correctly motivating their students.
