Unit 16 covered the teaching of conditionals and reported speech. I learned that there are several kinds of conditionals which depend on when a thing is taking place and the tense being used to describe it, as well as whether the situation is hypothetical, probable, possible, actual, or even relevant. I found that, due to the complexity and similarity of the way these conditionals are spoken, and the number of rules regarding tense and time, there are many opportunities for error. I was presented with ideas that can be used to teach these conditionals.
I also learned the intricacies or reported and direct speech, where a person is relating a situation to another in various tenses. I found that the verb tenses might change when something is used as reported speech rather than direct speech. The present tenses become the corresponding past tense, while past tenses might change types. How pronouns affect reported speech was explained and how critical it is to be sure that the appropriate ones are being used so that the listener is not confused.
I learned that time expressions can vary greatly, as there are many terms for words like today, yesterday, and tomorrow and that it is crucial to understand the timeline of the situation being reported compared to the timeline of the person reporting it.
Due to the intricacies and possible combinations of condition, tense, pronoun and timeline, I must take it very slowly and teach these concepts piecemeal rather than trying to teach generally about reported speech.
