Unit 15: Evaluation and testing gives instruction on the need to assess students abilities for a several reasons. Firstly, placement or diagnostic tests for new students to check their knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and spoken skills to ensure they are able to participate at the required level. Then progress (or again, diagnostic) tests to gauge what has been remembered over reading, writing, speaking and listening. The teacher then is able to address their needs in further lessons. Practise tests are used toward the end of the course to prepare students for external exams.
