Hazelwood, Missouri TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
Over the past few years, after beginning my Masters, I finally, for the first time, began taking grammar seriously. I began applying my knowledge of English language conventions to sentence structure, and at the request of my department head at Plymouth State, began familiarizing myself with the names of these conventions.
As a Spanish language learner, I had dealt with "el presente", "el progressivo", and "el perfecto", and understood the relationship between these titles and the language itself, but I never had made the same connections in my native language. At the moment, my conversational Spanish is not as polished as my knowledge of Spanish grammar, and while I can comfortably read and write in Spanish, I'm not very confident in my speaking.
This relationship fuels my internal debate regarding the relationship between "grammar" and learning a language, and "grammar" and teaching a language.
While I certainly must know these conventions as a teacher, I really don't think its required for students to know that "I have written" is the called the "present perfect", but instead all they need to know is its usages, which I believe can be taught through conversation, writing assignments, and reading assignments. Using model texts teachers can show students the way the language is used, rather than relying on shaky translations between vastly different languages.
