The introduction to the ESA approach to lesson planning has already done wonders for me as I progress through these chapters. Additionally, the inclusion of possible "activate" stage activities in this particular unit excited me greatly.
I recall my middle school experience with learning grammar, and shudder at the thought of how my writing teachers would give us this grammar conventions and end the class with worksheets, and pile on more worksheets for homework.
The philosophy of teaching English as a foreign language, at least in this course, has surprised me with its attention to additional activities within the classroom. I'm imagining myself in a classroom filled with students with an assortment of various experiences, all likely vastly different from my own, and can identify story writing, and storytelling, as a primary way of:
Building a rapport with students; getting to know them personally
Thoughtfully applying classroom material
minimizing TTT and promoting the value of students' ideas and experiences
practicing confidence with one's writing
All of these are vital to teaching. Lesson planning with the ESA format, and shifting from Teacher-Talk-Time, to more formal practice, and lastly to creative activities is a great methodology, and one that I can't wait to apply in foreign classrooms as I have in American classrooms.
