Fundamentally, past tenses relate to an action and/or event that happened in the past. Past systems are comprised of several tenses that differ depending upon the time being involved. Past simple is used when an action is finished in the past. It is important for EFL teacher to make differentiation between regular and irregular verb forms so that learners won’t be confused as the process of teaching past system proceeds. Past continuous form is generally occurred when longer action is continued before and after another shorter one. Past perfect composes of simple and continuous forms. On the one hand, the past perfect simple is used when a past action is completed before another past action starts. On the other hand, past perfect continuous is often implemented when a longer past action occurred that had been progressively taking place at that moment with mostly non-specific timing. I personally believe that the sequential order of past tenses is completely thorough and comprehensive. The full structure of each past tense is greatly important for novice EFL teachers. More precisely, the past tenses’ usages, forms (e.g., affirmative, negative and question), taking into account predictable students’ mistakes and sample teaching for activate stage are helpful techniques for EFL teachers to apply during the lesson. To sum up, it is compulsory for EFL teachers to clearly explain past tenses for better comprehension and learning of English language grammar components.
