Due to the lack of teachers' confidence, pronunciation is one of the most neglected aspects of teaching L2, even though students are very concerned about their pronunciation skills. Intonation carries the message of the sentence. It is very important when: asking questions, agreeing, disagreeing or confirming statements, and when we want to express our feelings. There are three types of intonation patterns: rise/fall, (used when we are finished with our statement, when we want to agree with someone or want to ask a question without the need for immediate response), fall/rise (which indicates surprise, disagreement, or the need for immediate response), and flat (which indicates the lack of interest). Stressed word helps us understand what someone is trying to imply. When teaching intonation and stress we can use the following techniques: stress marks, nonsense words, contrastive stress, gestures, etc. Due to the fact that some words are pronounced differently but written the same, the phonetic alphabet can be very useful and helpful because it contains a symbol for each sound needed to pronounce the word.
