This unit showed how crucial it is to use good communication skills and have a friendly and patient demeanor when teaching a class. The first video showed a gruff, impatient, disorganized, unfriendly and culturally unaware teacher who was unclear and made the students very uncomfortable and hesitant to participate. The second video showed a teacher who was friendly, spoke clearly, smiled, and was very organized. He helped the students enjoy the class and participate by smiling himself and creating a good mix of interaction. He refrained from pointing at the students and made sure to use their names often and in random order to ensure they felt recognized and that they couldn't predict who he might call on next. He joked around a bit and helped them feel relaxed and involved. I've learned that the teacher's attitude, ability, and personality can make or break a lesson.
