This unit went over some of the history of teaching new languages, providing the theories behind them, and their individual strengths and weaknesses. It then went over the ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) technique that is used successfully today, the variations of its order, as well as examples of what can be done in each stage. I thought it was helpful to learn some of the history so that we can see how things evolved and the "why" behind it. This helped me better understand how the techniques that I predominantly grew up with in school were perhaps not particularly successful in getting me to understand new languages, and why I shouldn't repeat those mistakes with my own students.
