To continue my reflection on the necessity of an appropriate lesson plan from the last unit, I would suggest that the two different videos offered in unit 10 could be indicative of the level of my preparation of a lesson.
I can connect to some of the occurrences in the first video, namely the instructor's inability to connect with the students, his inefficient use of questioning, and his rushing between phases. When reflecting on some of my lessons in the past, I found that these errors in my instruction occurred when I was ill-prepared, and without a solid lesson plan/learning objectives.
When I would prepare a lesson, not just planning the sequence, but selecting learning objectives and organizing particular instances for feedback (just as he avoids providing feedback in the Engage phase in video 2) I saw a similar increase in student participation and enthusiasm.
In the second video, the entire atmosphere of the classroom is so positive. Students are laughing with each other, they approach the instructor during the "activate" phase, and the instructor is also smiling. These class meetings are the most fun and productive. They are engaging, and build strong rapport between teacher and students, such that when a future class doesn't go as smoothly, the strong rapport remains and the students and teacher can work together to lift each other up.
