In this lesson, I learned about the different methods that teachers could employ to best help their students learn English. Methods like the grammar-translation and PPP method have some use, but should not be used as standalone methods in the classroom. Instead, the Engage-Study-Activate methods should be used, because they are more interactive and also combine some of the best practices from the other acceptable methods. In the Engage phase, the teacher has the student practice speaking English by eliciting vocabulary and sentences through activities. These activities could be related to the lesson but do not have to be. In the study phase, the teacher works with the study to learn the language form primarily through elicitation and activities. The teacher should still not lecture excessively at students. In the activate phase, the teacher should charge the students with using their newly acquired language skills to complete an activity and present to the class. It is important to find the balance between correcting too much and not correcting enough, and it is equally important to make sure you are correcting at the right time so as to encourage and help rather than discourage the students.
