Some of the most common problem situations that teachers can encounter in the classroom.
First lesson - New groups, some work will need to be done to establish rapport between students as well as between students and the teacher. In an existing group students are comfortable with each other and the EFL teaching. Teachers can conduct questionnaires or surveys or the students to get to know each other.
Warmers - These are short, fun, communicative activities designed to get the students motivated and using English. Especially useful if they if they are linked to the study phase of the lesson. Example; hangman, Pictionary, memory games etc...
Different levels - Students vary in their level of English. Some students learn quicker than others. Use different materials. Split the class into stronger and weaker students and give them material that is appropriate for their level. Pair strong and weak students so that the stronger students may assist the weaker ones and also interact with each other. Teachers can give the groups the same material but different tasks.
Large classes - Employ techniques to get all students involved. Use worksheets, pair group work, clarity, choral repetition, dynamics. Appoint group leaders. Fewer teachers choose larger groups as they are more challenging.
Use of native language - Use appropriate levels so that students have the necessary language skills to cope. Be clear and concise in your explanations to students. They shouldn't need to clarify or explain to each other in their native language. Only respond when they speak English.
Reluctant students - Some students may have confidence or intimidation issues. Use pair work. Use controlled practice. Use role-play. Use a tape recorder. There are various ways of encouraging a student to speak or participate.
Difficulties with listening texts - Common to nearly every nationality of students. Teachers should work with students to help improve their listening skills. They should use good quality, audible cassette recordings on the tape so students can hear well and tis will result in better understanding.
