In brief, the past simple is used for actions completed at a definite time in the past, the past continuous is used for interrupted past actions and the past perfect is used for completely finished actions (before another past action). Also, the past perfect continuous is used to talk about longer actions in the past that had been going on continuously up to the past moment that we are thinking about and the emphasis is on the idea of duration. I learnt from this unit a good teaching idea: to give students a final situation and ask them to think of reasons why that situation had happened.
