In this unit, I learned about theories, methods, and techniques. This unit showed me that there has been a debate about which method and technique produce the best results. Some of these common examples are Grammar –Translation, Audio-lingualism, Presentation, Practice and Production, Task-Based Learning, Communicative Language Teaching, Community Language Learning, the Silent Way, Suggestopedia, and the Lexical approach. Which method works best depends on the teacher’s personality, the culture of the students and their needs.
I understand that an effective method to teach is using ESA: Engage, Study, and Activate. All three ESA elements need to be present in most lessons to provide a balanced range of activities for the students. Examples of ESA lessons are the Straight-forward approach, the Boomerang approach, and the Patchwork approach. Each approach has its benefits to keep the class from being dull.
I learned that giving feedback is important as well as having correction techniques. Knowing the difference between a mistake and an error helps to better assist a student. Knowing how to correct a student and knowing to let students correct each other was very important.
