Auxiliary verbs help form a tense, such as be, do, have, etc. Adverbs describe a verb and usually end in -ly. Gerunds are -ing form of a verb used as a noun in a sentence. Pronouns are used in place of more precise nouns. Personal pronouns include he, she, we, them, and others. Possessive pronoun describe ownership, such as mine, yours, etc. Reflexive pronouns include -self at the end of the word. Relative pronouns are used to connect clauses in sentences. Prepositions show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence. The main types are time, movement, and place. Conjunctions join words or clauses of sentences. Every word in a sentence can be broken down into one of the listed categories. The English language has many types of words and sentence structures. It is imperative to teach students the parts of speech in order for their success in learning the English language.
