EFL students are usually eager to know how well they are doing in learning English and what progress they have made. Teacher should provide ongoing feedback to students based on observation during classes and also students can self-evaluate themselves to a certain degree. EFL students are also usually given different types of tests, depending on the school and depending on why they learn English in the first place. Placement tests are usually given at the beginning of the course to determine the language level of the students while diagnostic tests are given to determine which areas of English students are weak in and should work more. Progress tests are given periodically to determine how much progress students have made over time. Practice tests are given to students as preparation for different external examinations like TOEFL or IELTS. Finally, there are achievement tests given to students at the end of the course and proficiency tests that determine students ‘ level of proficiency in English.
