I have found this unit extremely helpful and important for my future advancement as a teacher. First of all, it was fascinating to learn about an evolution of teaching methods and their tight connections with different fields of science, such as psychology or mathematics. While I find some of the methods mentioned in this unit to be quite outdated or unnecessary complicated (silent method, for example), there are some methodologies that sound reasonable and effective. Suggestopedia is particularly a nice approach for studying a language. It has it all: calm and comfortable conditions to study, nice music, stress-free agenda. I remember being a kid and going through so much stress at certain classes at school with teachers, who couldn’t really create a calm and productive atmosphere, but rather go with repetitive drilling, constant testing and corrections, almost forcing the subject upon the pupils, making us hate it to the point of no return. And yes, I do believe that sometimes a bad, neglectful teaching can do more damage than no teaching at all. This is why the correct implementation of ESA methodology should really be the way to a pleasant and successful learning experience for both groups of students and teachers, because this approach: a) provides enough freedom for students to practise and even experiment with language; b) helps to introduce more fun and games to lesson’s activities; c) elicits a valuable information from students in a playful manner for further observation and timely correction by the teacher in a study phase of a lesson.
