In this lesson we learnt that there four basic skills in any language which are equally important: receptive skills - reading and listening, and productive skills - speaking and writing. To have a balanced approach it's good to involve all of them into the lesson. We need to understand that there are two categories of reasons and motives: for purpose and for entertainment. Students need to use different specialist skills when reading or listening, such as: predictive skills, specific information - scanning, general idea - skimming, detailed information, deduction from context. Students may have some potential problems in reading and listening. A teacher's task is to help students to minimize these potential problems. In work with the language pre-teaching vocabulary and careful selection of texts can be used. A choice of the topic should be made following the interests of the students and should be varied. A teacher can create interest to the topic by discussion, showing pictures. The comprehension tasks are also important to promote understanding, they shouldn't be too easy or too difficult. A teacher should consider the folllowing keys to succesful receptive skills lessons: choose material that interests/motivates the students; build interest before reading/listening; pre-teach comlex vocabulary or structures if necessary; vary the type of material, use the material to practise the different skills, use realistic comprehension tasks that aid understanding; incorporate activate phases that naturally lead on from the text.
