There are different teaching aids to make lessons more interesting and effective not to be restricted just by a textbook. Boards can be used for many things: writing, drawing, sticking things on, projecting overhead transparencies etc. For a good use of the board a teacher should follow several principles. Interactive whiteboards are increasingly used a teacher has to to be prepared and consider the following factors: test and have a back-up plan, system selection and location, IWB training regime, lesson planning with an IWB, making teacher's own IWB lesson plans, using the IWB as a screen. Another tool such as overhead projectors are useful for showing pre-prepared overhead transparencies or as an alternative to the board and have their advantages and disadvantages that a teacher has to consider in lesson planning. Also different types of visual aids can be used as pictures, real objects and photos mostly to illustrate the meaning of the word more effectively. Worksheets and work cards are used more for exercises and for presenting new vocabulary. The cassete recorders are not so often used nowadays because they have lots of disadvantages comparing with the CD players which are widely used as a primary source in the classroom. Videos and DVDs can often be used to stimulate discussion and also for communicative skills. Video cameras can be used to record the students during an activity, then play it back to them for analysis and discussion. One of the most useful tool available to students is a dictionary, that is why all classrooms should have a stock of the dictionaries. In addition to course books resource boks should be available for adapting, supplementing and replacing material from a course book. Photocopiers are particularly necessary for copying the materials aren't contained within the students' course books. Computers became an important part of the English language classroom and are used for word processor, EFL CDs, reference tools, Email, video/video clips, YouTube, Podcasts/MP3s/audio clips. There are lots of websites that teacher can use to find ideas how to make lessons interesting and useful. They can be divided into these categories: dictionaries, learning, literature & poetry, media, resources, teaching and miscellaneous. A teacher has to be creative in using different tools most effectively.
