Receptive language allows students to understand what is said to them and comprehend what is written down on a paper, sign, or TV. It can be hard for students to develop these skills independently, which makes having a native English speaker in the class a great source of authentic language. Understanding how and when to choose authentic, semi-authentic, and non-authentic materials for one's class is a key skill, as teachers will want students to be exposed to native-like materials while also being able to actually understand it at their language level.
