When learning a foreign language, students need to focus on four basic skills : reading, listening, speaking and writing. Reading and listening are receptive skills while speaking and writing are called productive skills. When planning lessons, a teacher should incorporate practicing all of the four skills so that there is a balanced approach. Sometimes a lesson will focus more on one of the specific skills, and sometimes all four may be incorporated in the lesson. When designing and planning lessons that focus on teaching receptive skills, a teacher should choose the material that interests his students,pre-teach any complex and new vocabulary that might cause difficulties, build interest before reading/listening and use comprehension tasks that check and promote understanding.
