Receptive skills, in contrast with productive skills, are about understanding language that has been presented. These skills are reading (for understanding written language) and listening (for understanding spoken language). Often, students find reading easier because it is captured on the page and can be accessed many times, whereas spoken language can typically only be accessed once.
A key component to teaching receptive skills is keeping student interest and motivation high. If students are discouraged or bored, they won't learn as effectively. Picking appropriate level materials (authentic or inauthentic) and pre-teaching the most difficult vocabulary or the most necessary for understanding can keep students from being discouraged, and picking subject material that is relevant and interesting to all the students can keep students from getting bored.
