The future tense is a bit more complex than the present or the past. The inclusion of the going to future form as well as present tense conjugations with future implications could be a major stumbling block or source of frustration for students.
A peculiar observation: mistakes with the future tenses tend to result in less confusion, though specificity might be lost. For example, using going to future rather than future simple or vice versa seems unlikely to cause confusion but will sound a bit odd.
