Unit 20 focuses on troubleshooting common problem situations including first lessons (i.e. building rapport), warmers, various learning levels, large classes, use of native language, reluctant students, and difficulties with listening texts. A key takeaway is how to approach reluctant students. Focusing on student speaking engagement is crucial for getting hesitant students more active. For example, using pair work, controlled practice, and role-play are just some ways to get students active in class. Having worked with large class sizes of up to 28-30 students it was good to refresh some techniques to approach teaching in a high student to low teacher ratio. The lesson shows a key way to view large classes as 'dynamic' and 'dramatic' in which there is a greater variety of ideas that can create humorous, involving classes.
