When discussing attributes of different learners, one thing the text said was that adult learners tend to have solidified "learning experiences" that are ingrained and difficult to change--set ideas of what teachers do, what students do, and what they're willing to put into a class. For me, this unit was a great reminder that--as a teacher--I need to be aware of my own "learning experiences," of the different learning experiences of my students, of how to navigate different educational conceptions/tendencies to have a productive, well-rounded classroom. I need to be aware of my students' goals, of their insecurities, and of the kinds of activities that best motivate them to be active learners.
Sometimes when a class doesn't go well, I can look back and think "Ah, I talked too much..." or "I shouldn't have participated in that activity, because some students needed a little more supervision/prompting help that I couldn't fully provide." I need to keep the different roles of the teacher in mind as I plan every single class, so I don't fall into an imbalanced routine or miss out on chances to engage my class. It's important to be an assessor, to be a model, to be a facilitator, to be a tutor, to be a participant--but not all at once, and not always in the same way in every classroom.
