In this unit I have learned about teaching the productive skills (writing and speaking). Both of them fulfil the purpose of communication. Writing is often very neglected in the TEFL rooms, however is the most difficult skill to master. From my personal experiences I can say, that writing is the most feared part of any language exam. When teaching writing, it is important to take a note of the native language of the learners. Some students might won’t know the Latin alphabet or won’t be able to grasp punctuation easily because the differences between English and their native tongue. Another common problem, spelling, can be helped by encouraging student to read more in English.
Speaking, while being a bit easier than writing, often causes anxiety for the learners, because of the low self-esteem, intimidation and fear of making mistakes. It is very important for the teacher to pick interesting and engaging topics for students to discuss and also be very sensitive when correcting the mistakes. As a rule, mistakes should be corrected during accuracy activities, however the fluency activities should not be interrupted, so students would feel free to experiment with the language.
